Duties and Responsibilities
The School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time (9-month), tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Environmental Policy. We seek a scholar with teaching and research interests related to natural resources and land use policy that can contribute to SES programs, including the BA in Environmental Policy and the MS Concentration and Certificate program in Environmental Law and Policy. The preferred candidate will engage in research, teaching, and service that contributes to the SES strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The position will start in fall of 2024.
The SES was founded in 2020, growing out of the former Institute of Environmental Sustainability, and includes interdisciplinary faculty in the biophysical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, who are driven by the Jesuit mission of promoting social, racial, and environmental justice. SES is structured around five focus areas to facilitate collaboration and problem-solving around biodiversity, environment and society, environmental health and toxicology, sustainable food systems, and climate and energy.
SES is committed to environmental sustainability as it intersects with social justice.
LUC provides institutional networking and mentoring programs, including peer-mentoring circles, teaching- and research-related seminars and workshops, and faculty socials. Additional opportunities exist to collaborate with scholars across the university through, for instance, the Institute for Racial Justice (IRJ), the Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL), the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship (CELTS), and many others. LUC's strategic plan includes objectives to recruit and retain diverse faculty, staff, and students. In our curriculum and co-curricular activities, we are fostering increased dialogue and action around the impacts of systemic oppression on the environment, Indigenous rights, and intersectional solutions to advance environmental sustainability and social justice. LUC strongly encourages faculty from diverse backgrounds to apply and is committed to providing support and structure so that all faculty can succeed.

- Maintaining an active research agenda, securing external funding, and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books. Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the faculty member's research program.
- Teaching two courses per semester to contribute to our undergraduate and graduate Environmental Policy programs.
- Engaging in service and outreach activities at the local, regional, state, national, or international levels.
- Collaborating with SES faculty in governance, program development, scholarship, and service.
- A PhD in a discipline such as environmental policy, natural resource and land use policy, public policy, urban and regional planning, or other relevant fields.
- Demonstrated excellence and promise in scholarship, including having a continuing and active research agenda and publication record, as well as strong potential for securing external funding.
- Capacity to teach undergraduate introductory environmental policy courses (e.g., Introduction to Environmental Law & Policy), as well as more specialized courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels in Natural Resources and Land Use Law & Policy.
