POSITION:A tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in the Department of Art & Design in the College of Arts & Sciences. The department seeks a dynamic graphic designer with expertise in interdisciplinary design who is committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining vibrant undergraduate programs. This appointment carries an initial two-year probationary appointment beginning with the 2024/2025 academic year on August 19, 2024.
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design or a related field by August 19, 2024, is required. ABD applicants will be considered but must complete the terminal degree by March 2025. Candidates must have expertise in Adobe Creative Suite software in both print and digital environments, as well as HTML and CSS, and be responsive to ongoing developments and innovations in the graphic design industry. Candidates must demonstrate an ability and excitement for teaching foundations, required, and elective studio and lecture courses at all undergraduate levels and to students of varied backgrounds.
PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS: The department seeks candidates with graphic design expertise and experience in some combination of UI/UX user interface and user experience design, animation, creative coding, motion design, 3D digital & product design, identity system design, and editorial and information design. The department encourages applications from candidates enthusiastic about emerging technologies and interested in the development of innovative curricula and integration across the visual arts. These could include such things as design thinking methodologies, theory and research, data-driven design, data visualization, exhibition design, way finding, or environmental signage. Experience with fabrication hardware (e.g., laser cutter, 3-D printer, CNC router), 3-D software (e.g., Blender, VR, AR, Cinema 4D), and developing a fabrication lab and promoting a maker-space culture would contribute nicely to department activities and programming.
DUTIES:Teach three courses per semester at all levels based on program needs and in accordance with specialization; participate in research and creative or scholarly activities; provide academic advising to students as assigned; engage in service to the department, university, and profession. We strive to meaningfully inspire, mentor, and serve the needs of all students, including students of color, students of more recent diasporas (e.g., Hmong, LatinX, Somali, Middle Eastern), and other groups underrepresented in the arts in Western Wisconsin.
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Art & Design consists of nineteen faculty and staff. There are approximately 210 majors. It offers the following programs: Bachelor of Fine Arts, BA/BS in Studio Art and Graphic Communications, and Liberal Arts BA/BS in Studio Art. The department offers minors in studio art and art history. Design courses are also part of the Multimedia Communication minor. The Department houses the Ruth Foster Art Gallery, maintains a woodshop and a finishing lab, and is developing a fabrication lab.
