Assistant Chemist
The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP) division of the College of Pharmacy seeks qualified applicants for a full-time Assistant Chemist in the Analytical Services group. This position will report to the Senior Chemist and will be responsible for qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products.
Perform analyses using a combination of wet chemistry techniques and analytical instrumentation in accordance with FDA current Good Manufacturing (cGMP) using standard operating procedures, USP, EP and FCC monographs, UIP or client supplied methods.
The UIP is a Food and Drug Administration-registered pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, providing expertise in contract pharmaceutical development services to clients around the world. This is an exciting time to join UIP as the new $96.3 million College of Pharmacy building is scheduled to open in 2020 housing a new section of sterile products manufacturing which is expected to increase UIP contracts.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Perform GC, HPLC and UV analysis under supervision.
- Enter and calculate results obtained in the above analysis in spreadsheets or databases.
- Prepare materials and solvents for analytical assays.
- Perform dissolution testing.
- Assist in the calibration and maintenance of instruments used in the analysis according to regulatory guidelines.
- Update existing or write SOP for routine analyses and basic scientific equipment as assigned.

Education Requirement
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or science with an emphasis on analytical chemistry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar type of laboratory.
Experience Required
- Experience operating High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) or Gas Chromatography (GC).
- History of laboratory equipment operation.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.
- Use or knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel and Outlook).
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience (typically 6 months - 1 year) performing laboratory testing in an industry setting under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) current Good Manufacturing (cGMP) or comparable regulations.
- Experience with associated software packages used in pharmaceutical quality control or similar industry.
- Experience with analytical chemistry (FTIR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, pH, moisture determination, titrations, etc.).
- Technical writing skills.
- Capable of using United States Pharmacopeia (USP), European Pharmacopeia (EP) and Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) monographs or supplied methods, to complete testing.
- Familiar with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
