Job Description

The UMKC Police DepartmentPolice Officer Traineeposition is a non-sworn, full-time, benefit eligible position specifically designed to prepare an individual for a Police Officer position in the UMKC Police Department. This entry-level classification is designed to allow for the assessment, hiring, and training of suitable candidates for the Police Officer position. Police Officer Trainees will complete duties as assigned but may not be assigned to duties that would require them to be a sworn Police Officer.Police Officer Trainees are required to sign a three (3) year agreement outlining terms and expectations.

Police Officer Trainees are required to complete all tasks, assignments, tests, and expectations of the academy they are assigned to in preparation for theMissouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)test. Individuals will serve as a Police Officer Trainee while completing the academy and theMissouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)test.

At the conclusion of the assigned academy, Police Officer Trainees must successfully pass theMissouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) test, as required by State Law, to become a certified Police Officer in the State Missouri (seeMissouri Department of Public Safety websitefor additional details).

Individuals who successfully complete theMissouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)test, become a certified Police Officers within the State of Missouri, and meet all minimum qualifications to be a UMKC Police Officer (as outlined in the comments section below), shall move to the title of Police Officer within the UMKC Police Department. They will become a sworn officers assigned to Field Training as outlined in department policy and procedure.

Completion of the Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) test coordinated by the assigned academy is a requirement of continued employment. Individuals who cannot successfully complete the Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) test or are otherwise unable to become certified Police Officers within the state of Missouri will be terminated.

Shift

Hours determined by assigned police academy.

Upon meeting qualifications for transfer to a UMKC Police Officer position, officers will work one of three shifts, including weekends:
  • 07:00 - 15:00
  • 15:00 - 23:00
  • 23:00 - 07:00
Overtime is expected for campus special events and functions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Missouri or Kansas driver's license
Preferred Qualifications

Completion of 30+ college credit hours from accredited college or university OR 2 years federal active-duty military service with an honorable discharge

Anticipated Hiring Range

Police Officer Trainee position is paid hourly at a rate of $21.42 per hour. Upon successful completion of program requirements and approved transfer to a UMKC Police Officer position, Police Officers will start at $24.42 per hour.

UMKC Police Officer Trainee Selection Process:

Phase I: Pre-Conditional:

1. UMKC Human Resource application accepted

2. Oral review board.

3. Background investigation to include, at a minimum:
  • verification of qualifying credentials
  • review of any criminal record
  • verification of at least three (3) personal or professional references
4. Voice stress analysis and/or polygraph examination

5. Oral interview with the UMKC Chief of Police

Phase II: Conditional Offer of Employment

1. Psychological examination and interview

2. Medical examination

The Police Department allows applicants not selected to reapply. This includes all applicants who successfully completed the selection process but were not offered employment. All applicants must reapply to be considered in future positions. Applicants who fail portions of the selection process will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The applicant will be notified in writing of their elimination/non-selection in the process and a determination on reapplication and/or testing.
