Job Title: Physician – Lab Medicine, Division of Transfusion Medicine

Job Duties:

Clinical

Division of Transfusion Medicine in the Section of Laboratory Medicine. Serves as the Assistant Medical Director of the Centralized Transfusion Service for Vitalant- Pittsburgh. Clinical responsibilities include general expertise in transfusion medicine with a focus on Patient Blood Management. As a member of the Transfusion Medicine division, provides transfusion support to the UPMC health system hospitals. In addition, Dr Kaplan is responsible for the HIV/HCV lookback program.

Research Activities

Actively engage in federally-funded clinical trials and industry-funded trials. Areas of research typically include red cell exchange in sickle cell disease, whole blood, cold-stored platelets, pathogen-inactivated red cells, and the red cell storage lesion.

Teaching

The Division of Transfusion Medicine is responsible for all pathology resident teaching including apheresis and coagulation. Hematology/oncology fellows in both the adult and pediatric programs and medical students also participate in the rotation. Division faculty also perform numerous teaching activities for medical, anesthesia, and surgery trainees and nurses.

Training

The division sponsors a joint one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship with Vitalant, the local blood center. The fellowship covers all aspects of transfusion medicine including immunohematology, therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection and processing, and blood center activities.

Minimum Requirements: Must have an M.D. degree or foreign equivalent; must have completed four years of post-graduate medical training in Pathology.

Work Site Locations: Vitalant Labs; All UPMC hospitals including the COE sites of UPMC Presbyterian; UPMC Shadyside; UPMC CLB; Children’s Hospital; Magee Women’s Hospital

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The individual will be a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as a participant in the UPMC/UPP faculty practice plan.
